An Article 15 is an administrative, nonjudicial punishment by Commanding Officers, for minor infractions of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). I received my first of three Article 15s towards the end of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana - for smoking a cigarette in my barracks room. My CO had me handcuffed, read me my rights, and scared me straight, because we were in a Judge Advocate General (JAG) School, in training to be Legal Specialists. I was advised then that COs had discretion, that Article 15s were unit-specific, and that this one from my training unit would not convey with me to permanent duty.
