I was probably supposed to be in study hall, but instead I tagged along with classmate Jeff Solari while he talked to the recruiter. I was wrapping up HS with a solid 2.14 grade point average, knowing I didn’t want to keep sitting in classrooms, and feeling smothered by small-town Maine life. Jeff went to college, I enlisted. My high Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test score let me choose my Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) and first duty station, I chose Legal Specialist, as a pre-curser to lawyer, because of Jessie, and Germany because it’s the foreign language elective I was taking, travel was my main motivation to enlist.
