"Um... Oh! and World Peace."
Summary: The foreskin is a vital, functional part of male genital anatomy. If there is not an absolutely urgent reason for removing it, it should remain intact - for ethical, psychological, and sexual reasons. The boy himself, when he is old enough, is the only person who should make any decision affecting the looks and function of his penis.
I'm an Intactivist: Having reviewed various articles from reputable sources on the pros and cons of circumcision, I have landed squarely in the NOCIRC camp. My problem is not with individual Moms & Dads who have thoughtfully and consciously elected to circumcise their sons. My problem is the manner in which circumcision became routine in the US.
It bothers me that there is money being made on the routine cutting of baby boys.
It bothers me that our baby girls are, by law, safe from genital mutilation, but our boys are not.
In the course of my circumcision research, the following quotes stood out in my mind:
We either choose to acknowledge the right of bodily integrity, or we do not. If this is accepted as a basic human right, then it automatically applies equally to all humans, regardless of sex, religion or cultural background. If denied as a right to one group, it is not a right at all, but a special privilege guaranteed to a protected class. ~Evan Sarveron
Consider that when you had this barbarity performed on a helpless child, you made it easier for those who would slice the genitals of young girls to see our protests against their practices for what it is: rank hypocrisy. ~An Intactivist
What's done to children, they will do to society. ~Karl Menninger, Psychiatrist
Following are some of the sites and articles I reviewed in the course of my own circumcision research, both pro- and anti- circumcision. I hope you will take the time to review this and other available material. If you still think routine infant circumcision is okay, please, tell me why. If you agree with me that routine infant circumcision is sickening and barbaric, then I encourage you to join the NOCIRC movement. I only wish I had the time, energy, and money to do more outreach.
[NOCIRC]Intact America envisions a world where children are protected from permanent bodily alteration inflicted on them without their consent, in the name of culture, religion, profit, or parental preference.
[NOCIRC] The Circumcision Decision Maker is an online decision-making aid for anyone considering male circumcision. Its focus is first and foremost on what is best for boys themselves, and only secondarily on parents, culture, or religion.
[NOCIRC] The Circumcision Resource Center is a nonprofit educational organization with the purpose of informing the public and professionals about the practice of male circumcision.
[NOCIRC]Doctors Opposing Circumcision advocate genital integrity for the health and well-being of all children. "We call on all segments of the medical community and of society to work together to create an environment in which newborn and immature human beings receive the respect for human dignity and the special protection they so richly deserve."
[NOCIRC]Dr. Momma says "Sorry folks, pop media or skewed info from the circumfetish cutting kings doesn't count as 'research' to being fully informed - especially not on this subject. Not when it directly deals with the health, development, bonding and well-being of YOUR BABY. Your child. Who will grow up to be an adult, with a body that was designed perfectly for him - or one that was modified without his consent."
[NOCIRC] The National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers was founded by healthcare professionals to provide information to expectant parents, healthcare professionals, educators, lawyers, ethicists, and concerned individuals about circumcision and genital cutting of male, female, and intersex infants and children, gential integrity, and human rights.
[NOCIRC] The Attorneys for the Rights of Children (ARC) is a non-profit organization founded to secure equal protection for, and broaden judicial and public recognition of, children's legal and human rights to bodily integrity and self-determination.
[Pro Circ] The American Academy of Family Physicians' position paper on neonatal circumcision does not present a position, its summary merely recommends that physicians discuss the potential harms and benefits of circumcision with all parents or legal guardians considering this procedure for their newborn son.
[Pro Circ] Similarly, the American Urology Association concludes that when "circumcision is being discussed with parents and informed consent obtained, medical benefits and risks, and ethnic, cultural, religious and individual preferences should be considered." They do add that the "risks and disadvantages of circumcision are encountered early whereas the advantages and benefits may be prospective."
[Pro Circ]Ritual Circumcision is a sign attesting to the everlasting covenant that God established with the Jewish people (Genesis 17). It was then reiterated through Moses 500 years later: and on the 8th day he shall have his foreskin circumcised (Leviticus 12:3).
